Music is my life. To me, life without music is not a life worth living. I spend hours and hours just searching for new bands, and songs. I have no particular favorite genre of music, however I do have a big heart for Country music. I mean real country music, not country-pop Luke Bryan shit. I’m a big fan of Johnny Cash, Toby Keith, Hank Williams(Sr. and Jr.) , Merle Haggard, Willy Nelson, and The king of Country himself, George Strait. My list is definitely not limited to these artists, I’m simply just naming some off of the top of my head. I listen to anything that’s good. And I what I listen to largely depends on my mood. When I’m angry, I listen to heavy metal, and other rock genres, and when I’m sad, I put on some Jack Johnson to lift my mood. What I’m usually not too fond of is Pop music, or mainstream music. The reason for this is usually one of two. Either 1.) I have already listened to it to point where I’m sick of the song, or 2.) It just gets me really pissed off.
I’m the type of person sees things black and white… at first. I don’t like that my brain is instantly closed minded to things, so I try and reason with other open views to pry open my mind as much as possible. This is hard to do. When I listen to Pop Music I always come across lyrics that I don’t understand, I can’t make out clearly without having to look up the lyrics, or I just simply take way to literally. Today, I am going to take you all through a journey through my mind, looking at my first thoughts on the top 5 songs on Billboard as of today.
1.Work – Rihanna Ft. Drake
Okay, this song literally sounds like a mentally-ill person, with a severe speech impediment attempted to make a song. Or rather, this person did make a song, and then got Drake to come in and actually sing real words. Listening to this for the first time, I couldn’t even make sense of what Rihanna was trying to say except for “Work”,”Hurt”,”Dirt”, and “Learn”. I’m really not sure what she expects me to gather from those words. I think of slavery for some reason. I guess those are some key terms that somebody from that time would use to describe their situations..
I will try my hardest to decipher the lyrics.
“Work, work, work, work, work, work
He said me haffi
Work, work, work, work, work, work!
He see me do me
Dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt!
So me put in
Work, work, work, work, work, work
When you ah gon’
Learn, learn, learn, learn, learn
Meh nuh care if him
Hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurting”
Somebody please make her stop.
2. Panda – Desiigner
“Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda
I got broads in Atlanta”
I guess this guy is trying to get the attention of a panda, who is very distracted by something… hence why he keeps repeating panda over and over again. When the panda finally responds to this guy, the guy tells the panda that he has some girls that are in Atlanta. Which Atlanta? Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, or Texas? Maybe all of them. Who knows. I have no idea why this in number 2 on the Billboard.
3. 7 Years – Lukas Graham
I actually like this song. Alot. This is one of those songs that I listened to when nobody had heard of him. This is not to say that I never found anything off-putting about the song. I’m sure you will agree.
“Once I was eleven years old, my daddy told me,
‘Go get yourself a wife or you’ll be lonely.’
Once I was eleven years old”
Okay, maybe it’s just me but when I was eleven I’m pretty sure all my dad told me was to “get my head out of my ass”, to stop “half-assing” everything, to not be gay, to not marry a black woman, and also threatening me to make good grades. I was never told to go find a wife at age 11, in fact I’m not even sure that’s legal. Also it doesn’t make any sense for an 11-year old to get married. What could they possibly bring to a marriage? They have no income, no ability to reproduce, probably pretty shitty credit scores, and also… they’re 11. Things that make you say, “What the actual fuck Lukas Graham.”
4. No – Megan Trainor
“Nah to the ah to the, no, no, no
My name is no, my sign is no, my number is no
You need to let it go, you need to let it go
Need to let it go
Nah to the ah to the, no, no, no
My name is no, my sign is no, my number is no
You need to let it go, you need to let it go
Need to let it go
Nah to the ah to the, no, no, no”
This song is pretty easy to follow. I just can’t figure that she’ll get very far in a job interview.
5.Pillow Talk – Zayn
So it’s obvious this song is about sex. I could just leave it at that. I guess at first listen I just kinda thought he was either really indecisive or maybe he just loved antonyms.
“We’ll go slow and high-tempo
Light and dark
Hold me hard and mellow…”
“It’s our paradise and it’s our war zone…
It’s our paradise and it’s our war zone…”
“Pillow talk
My enemy, my ally
Prisoners
Then we’re free, it’s a thriller”
So none of these songs really appeal to me. Mainly because they don’t make sense, or maybe just a small detail that my OCD can’t get by. Currently a band I like a lot is This Wild Life! Go check them out if you haven’t heard of them!
Let me know in the comments below any songs you are confused by, or any of your favorite songs you’d like me to check out and analyze. Maybe I’ll include them in my Next Lyric Breakdown! Thanks, Jerks! Don’t Forget to follow!
Loved it and you!

That song No drives me nuts, its like listening to a 2 year old shout “No” every time you ask a question.

So true – there are so many that I misinterpret. I always laugh at the people who say “song lyrics are the reason why crimes happen” because chances are people aren’t even hearing them right and to be honest, what I’d come up with in my head is usually worse.

I’m 99% sure that Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez should come with a warning label. Not Explicit, but rather – “Terrifying Because It’s True”. Listen to the lyrics and think about it. Maybe that’s why I like it? Hmmm…

Okay, that song is fucking awesome. Thank you for the recommendation! I guess you found the right blog to be following. I don’t find it terrifying at all. Search “Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus” if you want to see scary. Whatever that thing is on the wrecking ball gives me the heebie-jeebies.

What Emily said. + I’ve got dysphonia so most pop songs will drive me up a wall. Hang in there.

Thanks a lot for the feed back. And I don’t know what it is about Pop music/ Mainstream music. Maybe it’s just a mental block. Like, maybe I just don’t like the idea of participating with the majority. #Rebel

I remember Doris Day, George Clooney’s aunt — I’m a different generation than you — sang ‘Pillow Talk’ from the film of the same name, starring Rock Hudson. Wonder if it’s the same song 🙂

Same title, different lyrics. While Doris Day’s “Pillowtalk” seems to be about simply wanting someone to lay in bed and talk to, Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” is more or less just about wanting to have sex with a person. Also, I feel like there is more structure to the song by Doris Day. Thanks for the feedback!
